C3

Large organisations have increasingly invested in implementing the fundamental principles of sustainable development, considering its three dimensions: economic, environmental, and social. To this end, they are exploring innovative methodologies that allow them to operationalize and monitor sustainable progress in different areas.

In the case of INCM, around 1,500,000 expired Citizen Cards arrive every year, coming from notary offices, lottery outlets, embassies, and consulates. Until now, these cards have been incinerated three to four times a year without a solution that minimizes the environmental impact associated with their end of useful life.

The C3 Project appears as a response to this challenge, with the aim of systematically reusing waste from Citizen Cards, transforming them into inputs for the production of artifacts of potential interest to the industry and, if necessary, to the INCM itself. The proposal focuses on recovering the polycarbonate (PC) present in cards and converting it into granules suitable for thermoplastic injection processing.

This innovative project is managed by the Lab, in collaboration with DLG, DSO, UGF, DCO, and CEE, and has the participation of researchers from PIEP – Innovation in Polymer Engineering.
