Development of Cork Polymer Composites for Railway Applications

The ASPIRER project, led by Monte Meão – Componentes Auto S.A., aims to develop an economically viable production method for the mass production of composite panels and cork-covered benches, designed on a full scale and capable of integration into railway structures.

This initiative focuses on the use of cork polymer composites in structural and interior applications in the railway sector, exploring the unique properties of cork—lightweight, thermal and acoustic comfort, strength, and sustainability—combined with advanced industrial processes.

PIEP contributes to this project with its experience and technological resources in the areas of:

• Formulation and characterisation of cork polymer composites, adjusting mechanical and thermal properties to the sector’s requirements;
• Development and optimisation of overmoulding processes using thin cork films (epidermis) for application in railway components;
• Laboratory testing and validation to ensure compliance with technical and regulatory requirements.

ASPIRER represents a breakthrough in integrating sustainable materials into the railway industry, combining innovation, technical performance, and environmental commitment. With the participation of PIEP, the project strengthens the connection between science, technology, and industry, promoting innovative solutions for the future of mobility.
