PIEP, Muroplas, and the Coimbra Nursing School developed a medical device, consisting of a double-chamber syringe, of sequential release, for intravenous administration of drugs and serums.
The nurse can perform three administrations in a sequential step (pre-flushing, drug administration, and flushing) without having to change the syringe. The manipulations minimization will reduce the risk of infection and trauma-induced in the patient. The new syringe will also promote flushing, reduction of time and errors during medication preparation by health professionals, as well as material savings and cost reduction of health systems.
PIEP was responsible for product development, namely selection of materials, generation of concepts, selection of the most promising, and its development through virtual numerical models, taking into account the specifications and requirements defined at an early stage of the project.
