Development of prototype composite panels with double curvature

Within the framework of the R2U Innovation Pact – Modular Systems, the Variable Geometry Facades project is developing prototypes of composite panels with double curvature using a reconfigurable multipoint mold for facade applications. The reconfigurable multipoint mold allows the production of panels with different geometries by moving a pin array to form the desired geometry, eliminating the need for traditional molds that can produce only a fixed geometry.

PIEP is working on the development of these panels using vacuum-assisted resin infusion and vacuum-assisted thermoforming methods, in order to enable the development of solutions for double-curvature panels based on thermosets, but also thermoplastics, allowing their recycling at the end of their life. The major challenge of the project is related to the selection of commercial materials that allow for molding with curvature and fire resistance, in order to meet the demanding requirements of different European markets.
