Marine Sustainability: PIEP supports the “Blue Portugal” expedition

PIEP is supporting the “Blue Portugal” Expedition, an innovative and sustainable project that aims to preserve marine ecosystems and stands out for its environmental relevance. It is supported by prestigious institutions, such as the University of Coimbra, the Rotary Club, IE University, and AGI.

The expedition, led by Spanish explorer Nacho Dean, will travel along the coasts of Portugal from March to June 2025. It will document the state of the Portuguese seas and raise awareness about the importance of protecting the marine environment. Nacho Dean was the first person in history to walk around the world and swim between five continents.

The event began at the Port of Leixões and will stop at several significant points, such as the Aveiro estuary, Figueira da Foz, the Berlengas Nature Reserve, the Tagus River, the Azores, Madeira, the Southeast Alentejo Natural Park, and will end at the Ria Formosa, in the Algarve.

The “Blue Portugal” initiative will inventory the level of contamination of marine ecosystems and will involve the local community through awareness-raising sessions in schools and other entities. The data collected will be analyzed, providing crucial insights into the health of our seas, including plastic pollution, biodiversity loss, and the effects of climate change.
