The WoodSENSE project aims to develop intelligent flooring, integrating advanced sensor systems and innovative composites (WPC), to create sustainable, technological, and highly functional solutions for the construction and interior design sectors. This project explores the potential of emerging materials and technologies, such as integrated electronics and innovative substrates, aligning with the demands of innovation and sustainability.
The project’s objectives are:
• To develop a stable, uniform, intelligent flooring, integrating printed electronics to enhance functionality, automation, and operational efficiency, directly integrated into the floating wood floor with a sub-base.
• To completely replace the wood sub-base with WPC, eliminating additional layers that promote barrier properties, since WPC itself fosters barrier properties such as acoustic insulation and impact absorption, efficiency and comfort, and thermal insulation.
• Innovation in WPC development through the incorporation of a more sustainable expanding agent and the improvement of the properties of recycled and waste materials. Sustainable selection of additives, standardization of the additive process and composition, to stabilize and homogenize the production line and the final product.
In this sense, the final result of the project will be a sensorized pavement that will demonstrate sustainable innovation, with the reduction of environmental impact combined with the use of renewable agents and ecodesign and product durability; the circular economy, with the valorization of waste and promotion of sustainable practices; and technological innovation through an advanced sensory system combined with automation and connectivity.
