INCMLAB Interview – Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda Portugal e Direção de Marketing

A Imprensa Nacional – Casa da Moeda (INCM) launched a differentiating coin, called “O Clima” (The Climate), from the series “Desenhar a Moeda” (Draw the Coin), which contains recycled plastic and an environmentalist message.

This coin resulted from the collective effort of students from schools in the municipality of Guarda, who collected plastic waste, to be later used in the minting of 6000 silver coins. For the center of the coins, it was necessary to obtain mixed plastics supplied by Extruplás, Reciclagem, Recuperação e Fabrico de Produtos Plásticos, lda.

PIEP treated, recovered, and enhanced plastics using extrusion and injection moulding. The integration between metal and plastic and coinage was the responsibility of the INCM, in a project also led by the INCM R&D team.
