The Bordalo II coin produced by Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda (INCM) is nominated for the COTY Awards – Coin of the Year, one of the most prestigious international awards in numismatics.
The collector’s coin designed by the artist Bordalo II, with a face value of €10 and integrated into the «Urban Contemporary Art» series, is among the 10 coins nominated in the Most Artistic Coin category 2023. In addition to the artistic aspect, this coin features a numismatic innovation, developed in partnership with PIEP — Innovation in Polymer Engineering, which results in the incorporation of a half-moon made of recycled polymer at the time of minting.
The process for the Coin of the Year 2024 awards began in early January, with a global call for nominations. Of the approximately 3,400 coins released in 2023, around 600 were put out to tender by Mints, central banks, and other entities.
The nominated specimens will now be assessed by an international panel of judges, who will decide which coins are the winners in the 10 categories in the competition and, among these, the one that will be the Coin of the Year.
The Coin of the Year awards distinguish the best in the world in terms of design, technique, theme, and marketing of coins and the winners of this edition will be announced at the World’s Fair of Money, taking place in Chicago, on August 8th.
